Aptiva - ATI Mach 264GT video chipset limitations on Gallant planars

Applicable to: United States

Problem:
The specifications ATI publishes for the ATI 264GT chipset do not match the capabilities of the
Gallant planar. The Gallant planar lacks support for some higher refresh rates.

Symptom:
Unable to set the on-board video on a Gallant planar to a high refresh rate under Windows '95. At 640 X 480 X 16bpp, the Gallant planar will support up to 100Hz vertical refresh, not the 120Hz refresh rate published by ATI.

Temporary Workaround:
The refresh rate of the video adapter may be limited by the monitor chosen. Using the following steps may increase the number of choices of refresh rate available:

1) Change the monitor type (in the Windows Display Properties) to a Standard Super VGA monitor of the maximum resolution the attached monitor will support. If the attached monitor is displayed in the monitor list, choose that monitor instead. (Either of these disable DDC, which could reset the display to an undesired refresh rate.)

2) Go to the ATI Adjustments panel and select the refresh rate button. On the refresh rate panel, choose the radio button to display all refresh rates. Select the desired refresh rate.

WARNING!!! DO NOT set the monitor to a refresh rate outside its published parameters. To do so could cause severe, permanent damage to the monitor.

PERMANENT FIX:
None
