Aptiva - Optimal use of Wake-Up On Ring to answer incoming calls
Applicable to: United States
The Wake-Up On Ring feature of Rapid Resume can be used to automatically turn your computer on or bring it out of Standby whenever the phone rings in order to accept faxes or voice-mail.
There is a drawback to using Wake-Up On Ring with the system fully powered down. Even with the quick booting process of Rapid Resume, the system will still take 5-10 rings to fully power-on and accept a call or fax from a powered-off state. In many cases a person calling will have hung up. Or, in the case of a fax, many fax machines will time-out or stop attempting to send a fax after 3 or 4 rings. If the fax machine tries to resend the fax, as many will do, it will go through on the second try as the machine would then be fully up and functional.
For this reason we recommend using the Standby option rather than powering the system off when using the Aptiva as a fax or answering machine. Since the computer is at a low power state as opposed to being completely turned off, the time to answer is much shorter.
