Aptiva-PS/1 - Exiting at DOS Prompt without typing Exit
Applicable to: United States
If you are frequently typing EXIT at the DOS prompt to return to Microsoft Windows or Works after choosing to RUN OTHER PROGRAMS, you can define the [F1] key as EXIT.
Doing this allows you to press F1 to exit the DOS prompt rather than typing EXIT and pressing ENTER.
There are two steps to define the F1 key as the word EXIT. The first is to edit the CONFIG.SYS file and the second is to edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. You can use the DOS 5.0 EDIT command to edit the files.
Follow these steps:
1. Enter the following at the C: prompt:
EDIT C:\CONFIG.SYS
2. The DEVICE statement can be added anywhere, however, it is usually easiest to add it to the end of the file. So, move your cursor to the bottom of the file and press ENTER to create a new line. Add the following line:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS
If you are on a diskette based PS/1, the DEVICE statement is should read: DEVICE=A:\ANSI.SYS
3. Choose File from the menu bar and select Save. Choose File again and then select Exit to end the EDIT command.
4. Repeat the same steps to edit the C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT so you can change the PROMPT statement. Change the PROMPT statement from PROMPT $P$G to:
PROMPT $e[0;59;"EXIT";13p$P$G.
If you have already personalized your command prompt, substitute your code for the $P$G at the end of the PROMPT line. The 0;59 after the bracket is the extended ASCII code for F1.
Codes for all keyboard characters can be found in BASIC books. 13P is the code for the ENTER key. In fact, you can define a key to execute any DOS command. For example, if you wanted to define the F2 key as the DIR command, you would type:
PROMPT $E[0;60;"DIR";13P$P$G
5. After you have saved your changes to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, restart your system for the changes to take effect by pressing [Ctrl], [Alt], and [Delete] simultaneously
NOTE: This has not been tested with all software products compatible with the PS/1. Its use with such software cannot be guaranteed.
