Aptiva - 2159 Considerations - Microsoft Direct X 2 will corrupt ATI drivers

Applicable to: World-Wide

Microsoft's version 2 of Direct X includes Direct 3D. When it is installed, it will botch the ATI graphics drivers preloaded on the system. Version 1 of Direct X (Direct Draw) is does not cause this problem. This will include MPEG playback to fail, inability to change graphics modes, and the ATI Display Property pages being non-functional.

Billable Status: Free, We ship Direct X Drivers, Version 2 with Mech Warrior
Technical Limitation: Yes
Son Of Stealth: Yes
Steps to Replicate:
1. Install Direct X Version 2 Drivers.
2. Reboot.
3. Play MPEG, change graphics modes, etc…

Workaround:
1. To restore all ATI driver and keep the new MS code, load ATI graphics drivers level 3.0 or later to be included in some of the Stealth preloads. Look for them through Update Connector or on the BBS after 10/4/96.
OR
Reinstall version 2.15z drivers that are on the build.
1. Open Control Panel
2. Open System
3. Click on the Device Manager Tab.
4. Click on the plus beside Display Adapters.
5. Highlight ATI Mach64 PCI.
6. Choose Remove and click on ok.
7. Reboot and allow Windows 95 to reinstall the drivers.
This solution will not restore full utility to the ATI Display Property pages. In particular, the Change Display Type button in the Display Properties Settings page will not exist and Virtual Desktop will not work.

To restore the original property pages, restore the original MS DESKCP16.DLL file to \WINDOWS\SYSTEM from the recovery CD.
1. Download and run aptrstor.exe
2. Use the diskette to install Restore.exe
3. Place the recovery CD in the CD-ROM Drive.
4. Restart the computer in msdos mode.
5. Type Restore windows\system\ms deskcp16.dll and press enter
