TP 760E/EL/ED/XD,765,Dock II - How to configure an IDE HDD under Windows 95

Applicable to: World-Wide

SYMPTOM:
You've installed a IDE HDD in the 5.25 inch bay of the dock II unit. You boot the ThinkPad and you cannot see the drive when you open the "My Computer" icon on your desktop; secondly, you reboot the machine to a command prompt, type FDISK to see if the new drive is present for the IDE HDD you've installed and it cannot be seen.

SOLUTION:
1. Install the "IBM ThinkPad IDE Adaptation Kit for Dock 1 and Dock II" P/N 46H5994, in your docking station. Please follow the instructions that come with the adapter for its installation.

2. Re-boot the ThinkPad in the docking station, double click on the icon "ThinkPad Features" .

3. Open (double click on the icon) ThinkPad features in under the ThinkPad window.

4. Open the Docking station icon (it is located on the left side of the ThinkPad features screen, and is indicated on the bottom of the window) and check the box "Enable secondary IDE controller".

5. Select the "Advanced... " radial button and click on it one time to open it. The "Docking station Advanced Setup" window appears. Open the PCI device setup icon. The window appears which shows the IRQs for PCI devices.

6. The 1st IRQ is the default for the PCI Bus which is IRQ 11. Change the IRQ for the 1st IRQ to 9. Choose OK.
Note: You must specify another IRQ for PCI because the default address for the ISA SCSI Adapter in the Dock II is IRQ 11

7. Close ALL other open windows, Shutdown Windows 95 and re-start .

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
It may be necessary to set the jumpers on the IDE HDD to either Master or Slave. This depends on the manufacturer(s) of the HDD and their requirements. Changing the jumper settings on an IBM IDE HDD is not required.
The new drive may need to be partitioned (using FDISK) and formatted prior to being used.
