Limitation on using Norton AntiVirus with the Windows 98 Standby function
The Norton AntiVirus automatic protection options can interfere with operation of the Microsoft Windows 98 power management function called "Standby."
Standby is designed to reduce your computer’s power consumption when the computer is on but idle. You can put your computer on standby manually or set up your computer to go on standby automatically after a selected period of time. Your computer comes from the factory already set up to go on standby automatically. For more information about Standby, see the online help provided with Windows 98. To access this help, click the Start button on your Windows 98 desktop and click Help.
The Norton AntiVirus automatic protection options scan all files for viruses each time the computer accesses them to read data, write data, or execute programs. These automatic protection options, known collectively as Auto-Protect, are especially valuable when your computer receives files through a network, such as the Internet, or by removable media, such as a diskette or Zip disk. If you do not use Auto-Protect, you can run virus checking sessions manually or schedule to check for viruses automatically. If you schedule virus checking, make sure your
computer is on during the scheduled date and time.
If Auto-Protect and Standby are both enabled Any settings you choose for Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect will let you put your computer on standby manually. However, your computer will not enter standby automatically if both of these settings are used:
1. The Load Auto-Protect at Startup option in Norton AntiVirus is enabled.
2. The Windows 98 power management options are set up to automatically put your computer on standby after three or more minutes of system inactivity.
You can use these settings if you do not want your computer to go on standby automatically.
If you want your computer to go on standby automatically after a selected period of time, you must disable the Load Auto-Protect at Startup option in Norton AntiVirus.
To disable the Load Auto-Protect at Startup option in Norton AntiVirus:
1. Turn your computer on if it is not already on.
2. Close all open programs.
3. Click the Start button on your Windows 98 desktop.
4. Open the Programs menu to access the Norton AntiVirus menu.
5. Open the Norton AntiVirus menu and click Norton AntiVirus.
6. In the Norton AntiVirus window, click the Options button.
7. In the Options window, click the Auto-Protect tab.
8. On the Auto-Protect page, make sure the Load Auto-Protect at Startup option is not checked. If it is, click it to remove the check mark.
9. Click OK to save the new setting.
10. Click Yes when you receive this Auto-Protect message: "Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect will not automatically load the next time you restart your computer. Would you like to unload it now?"
Disabling the Load Auto-Protect at Startup option in Norton AntiVirus significantly reduces protection against viruses. You can enable the Load Auto-Protect at Startup option at any time if you do not want your computer to go on standby automatically.
Permanent Fix:
Customers should run Norton AntiVirus's LiveUpdate utility to download the fix as of 7/30/98.
