5250 Emulation PCMCIA Adapter - Configuring using the 1.01 Enabler

Applicable to: World-Wide

NOTE: This document can be used to successfully setup and enable the IBM 5250 PCMCIA adapter when using the specified components. This document may be used with other combinations of components (e.g., Non-IBM PCMCIA card, Non-IBM Card and Socket Services, etc.) but successful setup and enabling is neither implied or supported unless otherwise specified.

Setting Up 5250 PCMCIA Adapter on DOS Based IBM ThinkPad (Using IBM Card and Socket Services and 1.01 Diagnostic/Enabler Diskette):
1) Be sure the IBM Card and Socket Services have already been installed, normally they have been. If the drivers have not been installed insert the proper diskette in the A drive (for the 720 use the PCMCIA DEVICE DRIVERS diskette, for the 750 or the PS/2 E, use the appropriate UTILITY diskette). From the A:\ type UINSTALL. Choose DOS and PCMCIA.

2) With the new 5250 ENABLER disk in the A drive, type CFG5250 {Enter} from the A:\
-Use the spacebar to select "Card Services"
-F10 to save
-F3 to exit
-You should be back at the A:\

3) Type SETUP C:\ENB5250 {Enter}
-Make sure the device driver is still "Card Services 2.00/2.01"
-F10 to save
-F3 to exit
-About 10 files should be copied over
-You should be back at the A:\
-Pop the diskette out
-Switch to your C:\

4) Edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Make sure this line is there:
SET ENB5250=C:\ENB5250
This line should be close to the bottom of your AUTOEXEC.BAT but before any 5250 emulation, PC SUPPORT, etc. software loads. If it's not there, add it.
-Save
-Exit

5) Edit your CONFIG.SYS file. Make sure this line is there:
DEVICE=C:\ENB5250\CSDD5250.SYS
This line should be directly after the four C:\THINKPAD\XXXX drivers. If the EZPLAY drivers or some form of those drivers are being used be sure the above line comes after the C:\THINKPAD\XXXX drivers BUT before the
DEVICE=C:\THINKPAD\AUTODRV.SYS C:\THINKPAD\AUTODRV.INI

6) Alter your EMM386.EXE line so that it reads as follows:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=C800-CFFF or
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=C800-CFFF

EMM386.EXE can be in either the DOS or WINDOWS directory.

7) Make sure the following line is in the CONFIG.SYS as well:
DEVICE=C:\THINKPAD\DICRMU01.SYS /MA=C800-CFFF for AT bus or
DEVICE=C:\THINKPAD\DICRMU02.SYS \MA=C800-CFFF for MCA bus
This line should be one of the four C:\THINKPAD\XXXX device drivers. (Note: This line is not necessary for the ThinkPad 500.)
-Save
-Exit

8) If using the EZPLAY drivers, edit the AUTODRV.INI. This file is located in the THINKPAD directory. Page down about six times and these lines should be visible:
[5250]
CardID=5250
Option=Ignore

Put a colon ";" in front of the "O" in Option so that it reads

;Option=Ignore

9) Make sure the 5250 PCMCIA card is securely in the PCMCIA slot.

10) Make sure there are no diskettes in the disk drive.

11) Reboot

12) When the machine comes up switch to the ENB5250 directory and type "ENB5250"
This should generate a message stating that the 5250 card has been successfully enabled. If the card isn't successfully enabled the message that comes back will probably denote a resource conflict. See the below section on resolving resource conflicts.

13) Install the emulation software!

Resolving Resource Conflicts
1) To change resources such as IRQ, Memory, or I/O on the PCMCIA cards switch to the C:\ENB5250 directory.

2) Edit the CFG5250.DAT file. The lines concerning the IRQ, MEM, and IO_Port should be close to the top of the file.

3) To change resources exchange the desired value with the current value:
As and example the line:
INT=0005, 0003, 0004, 0006, 0007
is current setup to use IRQ 5 (0005), to change to 7, swap the 5 and the 7 so that the line reads as follows:
INT=0007, 0003, 0004, 0006, 0005

4) Save, exit, and reboot

5) Run ENB5250 to test that the resource conflict has been resolved.
