TP 380,385,560X,770 - Windows NT 4.0 Blue Screen Hang with PCMCIA Turbo Token Ring with SystemSoft

Applicable to: World-Wide

SYMPTOM:
A default installation of the IBM PC Card Turbo 16/4 Token Ring adapter will fail when used on any ThinkPad when the system uses the SystemSoft Cardworks for NT PCMCIA driver support. The error is a blue screen trap message, "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" pointing to the Token Ring driver IBMTKPCM.SYS.

CAUSE:
The shipping and web available versions of the Turbo driver for NT, (on the diskette TRPCC2.EXE) fails when used with the default installation options AND the SystemSoft PCMCIA support is installed.

WORKAROUND:
Turn off "Shallow Mode" - a driver option which removes the LLC response function from the adapter. (This function was always enabled in previous IBM TR adapters, now optional for better performance ) From the Network object in Control Panel, select the Adapter tab, then Properties, and use the GUI to set the options for the card. On the page that details the resources for the card, un-check the box marked "Shallow Mode" and save the configuration. After the system is rebooted the changes will be in effect. In testing, this eliminates the error.

SOLUTION:
The IBM Network Hardware Division will release new miniport drivers (miniport being the driver model which Microsoft will support in the future after the Vxd's are all gone) for the Turbo adapters. The beta level miniport driver has been tested with the shallow mode option enabled and the problem was not detected. This will be the final solution when these drivers are formally released, expected Jan 99.
