Aptiva - 2144/2168 (SL-C) Upgrading the modem

Applicable to: United States

Currently your Aptiva 486 comes with a pre-installed modem (MOdulator-DEModulator). A modem is a device that allows information to be sent from one computer to another over ordinary telephone lines. In today's world, a wealth of information is being made available electronically . With this increase of available information comes the desire to gain this information at a faster rate. This in turn fuels the need for faster modems.

A modem's speed is categorized by its BPS (Bits Per Second ). The term BPS is the actual speed of the modems data transmission (i.e., 2400, 9600, 14400, 28800 ). The term BAUD RATE is also used to categorize the modem's speed.

When upgrading your modem, first determine the Baud Rate of your existing modem. This can help you determine the necessary speed for the upgrade. You will then need to decide whether to add an internal or external modem.

An internal modem offers the benefit of using an available 16-bit ISA slot and an onboard 16550 UART. A 16550 UART gives better connection speeds and a better assurance of no data loss. An external modem connects to an available serial port. The Aptiva models listed below do not have a 16550 UART on the serial port. If you are going to use an external modem with the listed model types, it is highly suggested that you also purchase a serial card that has a 16550 UART. Without a 16550 UART, you will more than likely lose some of the higher connection speeds and possibly a significant loss of data during transfer (usually 14400 will be the max speed you could attain). Using an external modem offers the ability to manually raise and lower modem volume and also gives you the ability to look at the modem status indicator lights.
