Aptiva - Backing up files in Windows 95

Applicable to: World-Wide

Question:
How can I back up my personal files to diskette using Windows 95?

Answer:
There are two methods that can be used to back up files in Windows 95. The first method uses the Backup Utility and the
second uses the Copy command. The Backup Utility is the best choice if you have many files to save, whereas the Copy
command is useful for few files, e.g. less than 1.44 MB.

Using the Backup Utility:

1. Click on "START", choose "PROGRAMS", "ACCESSORIES", "SYSTEM TOOLS" and select "BACKUP".
2. Click on "OK" to continue.
3. Click on "OK" again to continue.
4. Click on the "BACKUP" tab at the top of the window.
5. On the left-hand panel, click on the + sign to the left of C: or D: or E: drive to display all folders in the drive.
6. Tag the file or folder you wish to backup by clicking the empty box to the left of it (a check mark should appear).
7. Click the "NEXT STEP" button to continue.
8. Click on the icon for the 3.5" floppy [A] or the icon for any tape or Iomega Zip drive you may have. This is where the files will be backed up to.
9. Click on the "START BACKUP" button to continue.
10. It will ask you what you wish to call your backup set. Enter a name to identify your backup.
11. Click "OK" to continue.
12. Click "OK" to finish the backup operation.
13. Click "OK" to close backup process.
14. Click "FILE" in the menu bar and choose "EXIT" to close the Back Up program.

Using the Copy Command:

1. First use the Find program to locate the file you wish to backup. Click on the "START" button, select "FIND" and choose "FILES or FOLDERS". Type in the name or partial name of the file you wish to backup. Now using the Look In drop down box, select the drive you think the file is on, i.e., C: and then click on the "FIND NOW" button.
2. Insert a blank formatted diskette into drive A.
3. A list of files that have the name you specified will appear. Locate the file you wish to copy and left-click on it once to highlight it.
4. Now right-click on the selected file(s) OR press Shift-F10 on the keyboard. A menu will appear.
5. Choose "SEND TO" from the menu and then select the 3.5" Floppy [A] icon. The file will then be copied to the disk in drive A. Repeat for any other file you wish to copy.
