TP 560 - PCMCIA 4x CD ROM Drive with Windows NT 4.0

Applicable to: World-Wide

SYMPTOM:
Error message on Windows NT startup "At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use Event Viewer to examine the event log for details." Event viewer shows 2 failures of 'auddrive', one is ESS audio and one is CD Rom.

SOLUTION:
The PCMCIA CD-ROM uses DMA 0, which conflicts with the ESS Audio DMA default of 0 on ThinkPad. To crrect this, use ThinkPad Features (Audio/Advanced) to change the DMA of the ESS to DMA 1.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The NT drivers for the IBM 4x CD-Rom are Beta They can be found in the Reference and Adapter Diskettes section of the IBM BBS and BBS Web Site under the name 'beta4xnt.exe'.

WARNING:
These are BETA drivers. They are presented in order to assist those who must use their PCMCIA 4X CD-ROM Drive (1969-008) in Windows NT on an "as-is" basis. The IBM PCMCIA 4X CD-ROM Drive (1969-008) is not supported in a Windows NT environment and no support is available for these drivers.

To install the drivers under Windows NT:
1) Open Control Panel
2) Open SCSI Devices or Adapters
3) Tab to Drivers
4) Select Add
5) Select Have Disk
6) Follow screen Prompts

These drivers can only be used if Card and Socket Drivers are present. The drive will not be Hot Plug-able since Windows NT does not support Hot Plugging. The drivers are only for the CDROM. At present there are no drivers for the sound
part (1969-009) of the card.

NOTE: These are beta drivers with no support. Please be aware of hardware resources involved.
