TP General - External monitor configuration under Windows 95

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
If an external monitor is attached to a stand-alone system running Windows 95, in order to achieve 1024x768 mode, you must set the monitor type in display settings to a monitor type that supports SVGA (i.e., 1024 x 768). If the machine is booted without the monitor attached, there will be an error indicating that the monitor type you have selected is not supported on your machine.

Configuration:
All ThinkPads in which the maximum LCD resolution is less than the resolution that will run on the external monitor.

Windows 95 does not set up a different profile for "Monitor Attached" and "No Monitor Attached." This should not be a problem if the monitor is attached to a docking station, since Windows 95 sets up a new profile for a docked configuration.

Solution:
Boot machine up without the monitor attached and verify that the monitor settings are set correctly. Go to System Properties Hardware profiles, and rename the current profile to something like "No Monitor Attached" or "Home Configuration." Then choose "Copy" and name the second profile "Monitor Attached " or "Work Configuration."

Doing this will force you to choose which configuration you wish to use each time you boot Windows 95.

Plug the monitor in and boot the machine using the "Monitor Attached " configuration and set the display properties to the appropriate settings. This will give you two separate profiles with separate display properties.
