PS/1-Aptiva - What is the FILES command?
Applicable to: United States, Canada
The FILES command allows you to specify the maximum number of files that can be open at the same time. Some applications have their own internal limits. Microsoft Works, for example, only allows 8 files to be open at the same time. You cannot change that number, it is programmed into the application itself.
With DOS, however, you can specify exactly how many files can be open. The maximum number of open files that DOS can have open is 255. For every incremental increase over 8, the resident portion of DOS increases in size leaving you less conventional memory free to utilize for your applications. You change the number of files that can be opened by editing your CONFIG.SYS file.
Example: FILES=25
The above example would set number of files to 25.
