PS/1 - Copying a diskette

Applicable to: United States

There are four methods of copying files from a diskette.

Method 1

Make an exact copy of the diskette onto another diskette. To do this, you will need a blank diskette, also called the target diskette. This target diskette must have the same capacity as the original or source diskette.

For example, if the source diskette is a 3.5" 2.0MB diskette, then the target diskette must also be a 3.5" 2.0MB diskette. Follow these steps for copy procedure:

1. Type the following at the C prompt: DOSSHELL

2. Select "View" from the menu bar.

3. Select "Program/File Lists".

4. Select "Disk Copy" from the "Disk Utilities" at the bottom of the screen by double clicking on the words (click twice with the left mouse button in quick succession).

5. Enter the source and target drive letters. If you are copying a 3.5" diskette on a single 3.5" drive machine, then use "A:" as both the source and target drive. If you are copying a 3.5" diskette on a dual 3.5" drive machine, then use "A:" as the source drive, and "B:" as the target drive. If you are copying a 5.25" diskette with the IBM 5.25" disk drive, then use "B:" as both the source and target drive. (If you are not using the IBM 5.25" disk drive, then the target and source drives may differ). Press Enter to continue the copy procedure once the drive letters have been entered in. Follow the instructions on the screen until the copy procedure has completed.

Method 2

You can copy all or part of a diskette to the fixed disk or to another diskette. Follow these steps to perform this type of copying procedure:

1. Type the following at the C prompt: DOSSHELL

2. Use the mouse to select and highlight the file(s) that you want to copy.

3. Select "File" from the menu bar.

4. Select "Copy".

5. At the "Copy File" window, verify the filenames of the files you selected in the "From:" field. Enter the drive letter and, if necessary, the subdirectory to where you want the files to be copied in the "To" field. If, for example, you wanted to copy files to a subdirectory on the fixed disk named "GAMES", then you would enter in "C:\GAMES", and select "OK" to continue. Follow the instructions on the screen until the copy operation is complete.

Method 3

1. At the C prompt change to the A drive.

2. Next change to the directory containing the file(s) you wish to copy.

3. Type COPY filename [drive:\path] and press Enter. Making sure that filename is the file you want to copy, and that drive:\path are the drive and directory you wish to copy the file to.

Method 4

1. At the C prompt type DISKCOPY [drive1:] [drive2:].
Please note that this command can only be used with floppy disks, that both floppy disks must be the same type, and that the same drive can be specified for drive1 and drive2.
