Servers - Multiple DDD drives caused by incorrect channel mapping
Applicable to: Canada, United States
Symptom
After one drive becomes DDD, one or more other drives will appear to be in a DDD drive state.
Problem Isolation Aids
All of the following must be true for this TIP to apply:
The System is any model PC Server Type 8640, 8641, 8642, 8650, 8651, that supports and is configured with a Type II or a Type III Hot Swap backplane(s) AND / OR has a attached external enclosure Type 3518.
The System is configured one of the following Adapters / Controllers that supports the internal Hot-swap Bays and / or external enclosure(s) listed above:

Fix
Note: all further references to "Bank" or "Banks" represents those internal to the System and / or those located in a System-connected External Enclosure.
Ensure the Channel-bank mapping correctly reflects the SCSI cabling of the ServeRAID / ServeRAID II Adapter / Controller to the Hot-Swap backplane(s) as follows:
1. Examine and NOTE the actual SCSI cabling of the ServeRAID / ServeRAID II Adapter / Controller to the internal Hot-Swap backplane(s) internal to the System and / or in the System-connected External Enclosure.
Example
Ch1 on the ServeRAID goes to Bank E
Ch2 on the ServeRAID goes to Bank D
Ch3 on the ServeRAID goes to Bank C
2. Ensure the ServeRAID / ServeRAID II Adapter / Controller is configured to map the SCSI Channels (the same as the physical cabling) using the following procedure:
Boot the System to the IBM ServeRAID and ServeRAID II diskette
Choose option 7 Advance Functions
Choose option 8 "Display/Change Adapter Params"
Choose option 5 "Set Channel -> Bank Mapping"
Using the same example (as in step 1), the Channel-Bank mapping should be set as follows:
CHANNEL - > BANK MAPPING
|
LOW ID HIGH ID LOW (REVERSE) HI (REVERSE) | |
|
 CH 1 |
 :E |
|
 CH 2 |
 :D |
|
 CH 3 |
 :C |
Ensure the Channel-Bank Mapping reflects the actual physical SCSI cabling (as was NOTED in step 1).
