Description:
ERROR: "There was an error writing to LPT1: ..." on a ThinkPad 701 with Microsoft Windows 95 installed.

The cause of the error is often an IRQ conflict between the audio adapter and LPT1. The following is a step-by-step
procedure to correct the problem.

1. When in Windows 95, press the <Fn><F1> keys simultaneously to get to the hardware Configuration Utility;
2. Press the Page Down key twice. You should see: User Port Settings: Stand-Alone..;
3. Hit the down arrow on the keyboard until 'Stand-Alone..' is highlighted, hit the Enter key;
4. Under "User Port Settings" locate the "Audio System Settings". Highlight these settings using the arrow keys;
5. Use the right arrow key to change the values. The following are some recommended settings:
'Port 0x220, IRQ 10, DMA0' Press the Enter key;
6. Press ESC to exit, be sure to answer YES when asked to save the changes. You should now be back in Windows 95;
7. Click on "My Computer" with your right mouse button to bring up the menu;
8. Click on "Properties" then click on the tab that says "Device Manager";
9. Locate the "Sound, video, and game controllers" icon, expand the branch by clicking on the + sign once;
10. Click once on the "ESS688" audio driver. Click on "Remove";
11. Click on "Close". If you are asked to restart Windows 95, answer NO;
12. Click on "Start", select "Shut Down...". Select "Yes";
13. When the system has shut down, press the power switch and reboot the ThinkPad;
14. On reboot, Windows 95 will detect the audio adapter at the correct IRQ and resolve the conflict.

After completing these steps, you should have sound and be able to print.
