Aptiva - How to load CD-ROM drivers from the DOS startup files

This document outlines the steps necessary to load CD-ROM drivers from the DOS startup files. These instructions apply to all Aptivas running Windows 95.

1. Click "Start" -> "Run", type "edit c:\config.sys" in the run dialog box, and click "OK".

2. The DOS text editor will open and the CONFIG.SYS file will be loaded. CD-ROM device support is enabled in the CONFIG.SYS by inclusion of the following line: "DEVICEHIGH = C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\IBMIDECD.SYS /D:IBMCD001". If this line is absent, add it exactly as shown above. If the line is present, verify that it matches the line above.

3. Close the Edit program by clicking "File" -> "Exit", and then answering "Yes" when you are prompted to save your changes.

4. Click "Start" -> "Run", type "edit c:\autoexec.bat" in the run dialog box, and click "OK".

5. The DOS text editor will open and the AUTOEXEC.BAT file will be loaded. CD-ROM device support is enabled in the AUTOEXEC.BAT by the inclusion of the following line: "LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:IBMCD001". If this line is absent, add it exactly as shown above. If the line is present, verify that it matches the line above.

6. Close the Edit program by clicking "File" -> "Exit", and then answering "Yes" when you are prompted to save your changes.

There is also one other file that Windows 95 uses to load DOS drivers when restarting in MS-DOS Mode. This is the Dosstart.bat file.

To add the CD-Rom drivers to the dosstart.bat file :

1. Click "Start", "Run", then type "Edit C:\windows\dosstart.bat" in the run dialog box, and click "OK"

2. The DOS text editor will open and the DOSSTART.BAT file will be loaded. CD-ROM device support is enabled in the DOSSTART.BAT by the inclusion of the following line: "LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:IBMCD001". If this line is absent, add it exactly as shown above. If the line is present, verify that it matches the line above.

3. Close the Edit program by clicking "File" -> "Exit", and then answering "Yes" when you are prompted to save your changes.

Once the CONFIG.SYS , AUTOEXEC.BAT, and DOSSTART.BAT files have been modified as shown above, click "Start" -> "Shutdown" -> "Restart the Computer", and then click "Yes". The system will restart, and the real mode (DOS) CD-ROM drivers will be loaded.
