Aptiva - Changing screen lines in DOSSHELL

Applicable to: United States

When using the DOSSHELL program, you may wish to see more lines on the screen, particularly when looking at a long list of files. If you have SVGA video and a suitable monitor, DOSSHELL can be tailored to provide these additional lines.

To change the number of lines on the screen, select Options from the top menu bar, then select Display... from the drop-down menu. This will give you a list of the available line selections for your system. Select one and click on the Preview button to see what the display would look like. Press any key to return to the prior resolution to try another. Once you have determined the best display for your purposes, click on OK to save the change. Anytime thereafter that you run DOSSHELL, it will start up with this new number of lines that you've just set, and you can always change it again at a later time.

For some selections, you may notice that the screen sides will bulge out in the middle or the display will otherwise appear as if something may be wrong with the monitor. In these cases, the problem is just due to the video mode being used and the scanning frequency of the monitor. While adjusting the monitor may help, it is often better to just select a new setting for the number of lines, since any adjustments that you make will also affect the viewing of Windows and other applications, often requiring many adjustments.

One caution about changing screen lines: Do not run DOSSHELL from Windows or Windows File Manager if you intend to change lines. The video mode that has been set up in Windows will be reset by DOSSHELL, possibly causing problems with the display when returning to Windows. This can be a system hang, loss of the mouse pointer, a change in the video resolution or colors in Windows, or various other inconsistencies. If you want to run DOSSHELL to change the number of lines on the screen, always exit Windows completely before starting DOSSHELL.
