Aptiva - 2158/2163/2164 Considerations - No sound on boot

Description:
When the system boots (first, cold, warm) the audio subsystem may not be available for use by the customer.
The symptoms are no "Windows open sound", speaker icon does not appear on task bar and all audio related apps (MediaPlayer, Sound Recorder, etc. fail. The failure is random but may occur on 5-6% of boots on some configurations.
Models affected:
2158, 2163, and 2164
How to duplicate:
Boot system; Listen for the Windows open sound.
Root cause:
Root cause of failure is unknown at this time. MS support is investigating. MS has targeted 5:00 pm, 12/07/98
to have root cause and perhaps a fix/workaround.
Workaround:
At this time there is no fix. The workaround is for the customer to reboot by Start, shutdown, restart, OK.
Given the low occurrence rate, the likelihood of experiencing the failure on two consecutive boot is extremely low.
