IBM PC300XL - Installing options under Windows 95

Applicable to: World-Wide

Installing Options in a PC 300XL machine type 6588 under Windows 95.

Materials needed:
1. Option (drive, adapter, and so on) being installed.

2. Device drivers for the option being installed. Many manufacturers include the device drivers on diskettes provided with the option. Some manufacturers might post the device drivers on the Internet which you can download onto a diskette. For details, see the documentation provided with the option or contact the manufacturer.

3. Documentation (manuals, README files, and so on) for the option.

4. Windows 95 diskettes or CD.

5. "Using Your Personal Computer" publication (provided with your computer.)

6. "Installing Options in Your Personal Computer" publication (provided with your computer.)

Getting started:
1. Run ConfigSafe and take a "snapshot" of the current system configuration. Run ConfigSafe to:

a. View the changes in the system configuration after the option has been installed.

b. Recover the system to its original configuration in the event of file corruption (such as accidentally erasing a file or renaming a file.)

c. While ConfigSafe is running, do the following:
- Read the manual for the option that you want to install. Make a note of which resources the option uses (IRQ, I/O, DMA.) Also, look for any specification information on installing the option in Windows 95 systems.

- Read "Installing Options in Your Personal Computer" (provided with your computer) for instructions on how to install the option into the computer.

d. Identify available resources in Device Manager:

- In Windows 95, double click on "My Computer".
- Double click on "Control Panel".
- Double click on "System". The "System Properties" window appears.
- Click on the "Device Manager" tab. If it is not selected, click on "View devices by type".
- On the list provided under "Device Manager", double click on "Computer". The "Computer Properties" window appears.
- If it is not selected, click on the "View Resources" tab. Here you can see which IRQs, I/O, DMA, and memory areas are available by clicking on the resource that you want to learn about.

e. Close all open windows, and shut down the operating system. Turn off the computer, and unplug all power cords from electrical outlets.

f. Install the option into the computer (for assistance, refer to "Installing Options in Your Personal Computer".)

Note: If you are installing multiple options, install one option and ensure that it is configured correctly before installing another option. If you install more than one option at a time, multiple system resource conflicts might occur.

g. After installing the option, replace the computer cover, plug the power cords into the electrical outlets, and turn on the computer.

h. Let Windows 95 detect the hardware.

i. After the new hardware is detected, a window appears. Select "Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer", and then insert the device-driver diskette. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Note: If you need further assistance, refer to the manual supplied by the manufacturer. Look for information on installing the option in Windows 95 systems.

Verify that the option is installed and recognized by Windows 95:
1. Enter Device Manager and verify that the option is installed. If the option is listed, the installation was a success. To enter Device Manager:

- Double click on "My Computer".
- Double click on "Control Panel".
- Double click on "System". The "System Properties" window appears.
- Click on the "Device Manager" tab. If it is not selected, click on "View devices by type". Look for the option in the list provided.

2. If the option does not appear in Device Manager or if there is a conflict, do the following:

a. Manually add the new hardware:

- Double click on "My Computer".
- Double click on "Control Panel".
- Double click on "Add New Hardware".
- Click on NEXT at the Add New Hardware Wizard screen. The next screen asks (and recommends) if you want Windows 95 to search for your new hardware. Select YES, and click on NEXT.

Note: A warning is posted that informs you that the search will take some time. Click on NEXT at this screen. The detection starts. Do not attempt to stop the search or turn off your computer during this process.

- When the detection is complete, click on the box that is labeled "Details". This lists the devices that Windows 95 has detected. If the device is on the list, highlight the device and click on FINISH to complete the installation. If the device is not found on the list, click on CANCEL and go to step b.

b. Verify that you have the latest device drivers installed for the option. Contact the manufacturer of the option for more information.

c. Refer to the documentation for the option to verify the supported resources. Also, refer to any troubleshooting information provided with the option.

d. If the manufacturer of the option has a Web site or other Internet presence, look to this on-line resource for any hints or tips for Windows 95.

e. Verify that the latest BIOS is installed on your computer. IBM might make changes to the computer BIOS. When updates are released, they are available as downloadable files on the World Wide Web or through the PC Company Bulletin Board Service. See "Using Your Personal Computer" for more information.

f. If you still need further assistance, please call the IBM PC Helpcenter. In the United States, please call 1-800-772-2227 and in Canada call 1-800-565-3344. There might be a fee for this call if the problem is not related to IBM hardware or the pre-installed operating system.

Most common options to install:

CD-ROM Drive:
1. If you have installed a retailed version of Windows 95, it is recommended that you obtain and install the BusMastering IDE/SMART V3.01 driver for Windows 95. The driver can be found on the IBM web site at URL: www.us.pc.ibm.com/cdt/search.html - under the IBM PC Support section. The driver file names is z23t11a.exe. This driver will allow Windows 95 to auto detect the CD-ROM upon installation in most cases.

2. After installing the CD-ROM drive in the computer, turn on the computer and start Windows 95.

- Double click on "My Computer".
- Double click on "Control Panel".
- Double click on "System". The "System Properties" window appears.
- Click on the "Device Manager" tab. If it is not selected, click on "View devices by type".

The next panel gives you information on the devices that Windows 95 recognizes as installed in your computer. Check the list to see if Windows 95 has a CD-ROM drive listed. If it is not listed, then go to step f. If there is a CD-ROM drive listed,
click on the + sign to show the list of CD-ROM drives. Make sure there is no yellow ! next to the device. If there is, double click on the CD-ROM drive listed to find out why there is a conflict. Refer to the manual that comes with your CD-ROM drive and check the troubleshooting section for assistance. If there is still a conflict, refer to section III "Verify that the option is installed and recognized by Windows 95" step b above. If there is no conflict, the CD-ROM drive installation in Windows 95 is complete. If there is no CD-ROM drive listed, continue:

3. If the "System Properties" window is opened, click on "Cancel". You should be in the "Control Panel" window. Select "Add New Hardware".

4. Click on the "Next" tab (found at the bottom of the screen.) Do not select an option from the list. Let Windows 95 detect
the hardware device for you.

5. When complete, click on the tab at the right labeled "Details".

6. Select "Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller". Windows 95 might prompt you to insert diskette number 5. Insert the diskette if prompted.

7. When the device drivers are loaded, click on the tab labeled "Finish".

8. Verify the installation by double clicking on the icon labeled "System".

9. In the "Systems Properties" window, click on the "Device Manager" tab. Check the list to verify that the CD-ROM drive is installed. If the CD-ROM is not installed or if there is a conflict, go to "Verify that the option is installed and recognized by Windows 95" above.
