Aptiva - 2140 LQ4/5 Recovery instructions
Applicable to: AP-S
BEFORE YOU START
It is important you back up any information you wish to keep from your hard drive onto floppy diskette before administering the following instructions. Any files or additional software you have saved to your hard disk drive will be deleted during the recovery process.
By proceeding with these instructions it is taken that you understand the hard drive on your Aptiva will be formatted and only the preloaded original software will be installed on your computer. Any additional software and the files you have saved to floppy diskette can be reloaded after the recovery is complete.
INSTRUCTIONS
Unplug the USB Gamepad
Insert the red Aptiva Product Recovery CD into the CD-ROM drive
Restart your computer. If you are currently in Windows 95, use the correct shutdown procedure.
The following message will be displayed on the screen
Aptiva Recovery Utilities
You are about to enter the Aptiva Recovery
Utilities which will allow you to recover
your computerÆs original files.
You will be given the option to perform this
WITH or WITHOUT hard disk formatting,
or to select specific files for recovery.
Do you wish to continue (Y/N)? [ ]
<ESC> Exit <Y> Yes <N> No
Press the ESC key
You will now be at a flashing prompt. Type fdisk then press Enter
You will now have a long message on your screen. The last line reads;
Do you wish to enable large disk support (Y/N)...........? [Y]
Press Enter
You will now be at the Fdisk menu. Select number 3 - to delete a partition then press Enter
Select number 1 - Delete Primary DOS Partition then press Enter
Select number 1 and press Enter
Enter the volume label EXACTLY as it appears listed at the top of your screen then press Enter
Type Y and then press Enter
Press Esc three times
Turn your computer off directly from the power point at the wall. Leave off for 10 seconds then restart.
The following message will be displayed on the screen;
Aptiva Recovery Utilities
You are about to enter the Aptiva Recovery
Utilities which will allow you to recover
your computerÆs original files.
You will be given the option to perform this
WITH or WITHOUT hard disk formatting,
or to select specific files for recovery.
Do you wish to continue (Y/N)? [ ]
<ESC> Exit <Y> Yes <N> No
Press the Y key, then press the Enter key
Your hard disk is not partitioned, and must be partitioned to recover the Aptiva software
Do you want me to partition it (Y/N?)
Type Y then press Enter
Partition complete.
I am going to reboot now.
Press any key to exit.
Press Enter
The computer will then reboot
The recovery process has now commenced. You will see the hard disk drives being formatted and then files inflating and extracting whilst scrolling on the left hand side of the screen. This process will take approximately 20 minutes.
The following message will then be displayed on the screen
Recovery complete!
Remove the Aptiva Product Recovery CD and
press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to reboot
Remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive
Restart your computer by using the on/off button on the system unit
The computer will then display an error message about a virus warning. This is to be expected !!
With Change is Expected still highlighted, press the Enter key
When the computer restarts, your computer will start detecting new devices
Then a screen will appear with the following message

Or, Press the ESC key to exit the Tutorial
Press Y to confirm exiting the tutorial
At the Regional Settings screen select English (Australian) or the language appropriate for your region.
Click on Next
At the Keyboard Layout screen select the default setting of United States 101 by clicking on Next
Enter the name of the owner of the computer at the User Info screen in the text box. If the PC is privately owned the company text box should be left empty.
Click on Next
Read the Licence Agreement on the next screen carefully.
If you accept the agreement click on accept. If you do not accept the agreement click on disagree
(If you choose disagree the installation will not continue and you will be exited to a command prompt)
Click on I accept the agreement
Click on Next
Enter your Certificate of Authenticity exactly as it appears on the green label pasted to the Windows 95 booklet you received with your Computer. This number starts AFTER the words æProduct ID:Æ. You will only need type the numbers of the code.
Click Next then Click Finish
The system may now ask for the ôIBM Monitor Installation Diskö. If it does :
Insert the Monitor Installation Disk into the floppy drive (A:) and click on OK
The öSetting up Hardwareö window will now appear, with a space at the bottom for ôCopy files from:ö
Type A: and press the Enter key
The system will now display a ôCopying Filesö window for a few minutes.
Remove the disk from the floppy drive when the ôDate/Time Properties window appears.
The ôDate/Time Propertiesö window will appear
Select the Time Zone that you are located in
Select Close
The ôModem Initialization Setupö window will appear
Click OK
Make sure that the country selected matches your current location.
A message will now be on the screen, stating that Setup has finished configuring your system
Click OK
The computer will now reboot. When the system returns, it will display the Windows Login window
Type in your Login name, then click on OK
Click OK again to confirm that there is no password
Your system will now detect and complete setting up unknown devices and hardware.
When windows has finished loading, you will have the ôWelcome to Windows 95ö screen.
Select Close
You can now see a default Windows 95 Installation, with a green coloured background
double click on the Your Aptiva Adventure Starts Here! icon
The following message will then be displayed on the screen;
Welcome to your new Aptiva.....
click on the Continue button
The following message will then be displayed on the screen;
First, tell us where you will be using this Aptiva computer
click on the Home, Office or School button
Now the Aptiva Welcome video will play. When the video finished, the screen will be showing some Sound and Motion samples
click on the Exit button
The following message will then be displayed on the screen;
About the Aptiva Welcome
click on the OK button
The following message will then be displayed on the screen;
One more step before youÆre ready to live the Aptiva Adventure!
.....
click on the Continue button
The rest of the preload software will now be installed onto your Aptiva Computer.
At the completion of the install, the computer will restart.
When windows restarts, it will display the Windows login screen
type in your login name and click on OK
