TP 770X - Upgrading Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 Beta build 1946

IBM Personal Systems Group Support for Microsoft Windows 2000 Beta

IBM is providing a selection of drivers and information to assist our customers who are evaluating the Microsoft Windows 2000 family of products during the beta test phase. It is hoped that these materials will be helpful to you. These instructions were written based on upgrading to Windows 2000 Beta build 1946 over a preloaded Windows NT 4.0 hard drive.

Notes: disable Norton Antivirus before installation and uninstall the audio, ACP modem, and TrackPoint drivers before beginning installation.

  1. Restore the original Windows NT 4.0 preload for best upgrade results.
  2. Logon onto Windows NT with the Administrator ID and password.
  3. Insert the Windows 2000 CD into the CD-ROM drive and when prompted, click Yes to upgrade the system.
  4. The Windows 2000 Setup dialog box appears. Choose Upgrade to Windows 2000 and click on Next.
  5. Click I accept the agreement for the EULA and click Next.
  6. Click No to upgrade the drive to NTFS, and click Next. The file system conversion can occur after the installation if required.
  7. A dialog box will popup, The box will be labelled Service to be Disabled. Click OK to uninstall SystemSoft CardWizard PCMCIA drivers.
  8. Click Yes at the dialog box stating that CardWizard has been removed and that the system needs to be restarted before continuing the upgrade.
  9. Several dialog boxes referring to power management pop-up and disappear and the system reboots. Open CD-ROM drive drawer.
  10. Logon into Windows NT and then close the CD-ROM drive drawer.
  11. The Upgrade dialog box appears and repeat steps 3 through 6.
  12. A dialog box stating that the IBM power management drivers not compatible appears. Click OK to remove the drivers and continue Setup.
  13. Windows 2000 reports system compatibility problem the CrystalWare audio drivers and the IBM two track driver (TrackPoint). Click Next to continue.
  14. Setup begins copying installation files.
  15. Setup reboots the machine, and a new menu item appears at boot. The new option is Windows 2000 Professional Setup and is the default OS selected to load.
  16. Setup starts loading files.
  17. Setup asks for the Windows 2000 CD to be inserted. Press Enter when ready.
  18. Scandisk checks the hard drive and when complete, Setup copies files to the hard drive and then restarts the computer.
  19. Windows 2000 GUI starts and then the Windows 2000 Setup Wizard runs.
  20. A NAV error appears: Cannot start symevent. Click OK to continue.
  21. Setup detects and installs devices.
  22. The following dialog box appears: Installing driver. This device is only used during setup. You may not manually select and install this device. Please choose another device. Click on OK - No mention of a specific device.
  23. Click OK and continue.
  24. Setup asks for a CD labelled Thinkpad Modem Diskette 1 to be inserted into E:\. Click OK to copy files from another source. Insert the ACP Modem Diskette #1 into A:\ and click on OK.
  25. A dialog box will appear asking for the source files location. Change the source path from E:\ to A:\ and then click on OK.
  26. The installation fails because it does not recognize the floppy drive attached externally.
  27. Cancel the ACP Modem driver installation.
  28. Windows 2000 device detection continues and then the installation process continues.
  29. Network components are installed.
  30. Windows 2000 installs its native components.
  31. The setup process completes its final set of tasks including , Start Menu items, registering components, saving settings and removing any temporary files.
  32. System restarts.
  33. Log into Windows 2000 with administrator id and password. A Error message dialog box will appear with NAV AutoProtect, unable to Start SymEvent. Click OK to continue.
  34. Login using the Windows 2000 Administrator ID and password.
  35. The desktop loads with the following TrackPoint error: Couldn't open device twotrack.vxd or twotrack, exiting. Click OK to continue.
  36. Windows 2000 finds new hardware (Trident Video Accelerator 3D Cyber 9397DVD). Click Next in the Found new hardware window.
  37. Select Search for new driver and click Next.
  38. Remove the check by Floppy and click Next.
  39. Click Next when setup finds c:\winnt\sgui.inf.
  40. Click Finish.
  41. Found New Hardware Wizard runs and detects an unknown device. Click Next to continue.
  42. Select Search for new driver and click Next.
  43. Remove the check by Floppy and click Next.
  44. The hardware wizard is unable to find a device. Click Disable then Finish.
  45. Desktop completes loading.

ThinkPad Configuration Installation

  1. Insert the ThinkPad Utility diskette 1 into the floppy drive. Run A:\SETUP from the ThinkPad Utility diskette 1 to begin installation.
  2. Click Next at the Welcome screen.
  3. Click Next at the sub-directory prompt to accept the default.
  4. Make sure Custom is selected and then click on Next.
  5. Remove the check mark in the Personalization Editor box.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Files will start to be copied and you will then be prompted for the second diskette.
  8. Insert diskette # 2. When prompted, insert the ThinkPad Utility Data Diskette.
  9. The program groups will be created and Setup will prompt you to restart the system. Click Finish.

ThinkPad ACP Modem Installation

  1. Insert the ThinkPad ACP Modem driver diskette 1 into the floppy drive and run A:\SETUP.
  2. Setup detects the existing ACP Modem Software, and directs you to uninstall the previous version before installing the new drivers. The ThinkPad DSP utility screen appears. Click Utilities and then Remove. Click Yes to confirm that you want to uninstall the ACP drivers.
  3. When prompted, click on Yes to restart the computer (remove the diskette from the floppy drive).
  4. Login using the Administrator ID and password. After logging in, reinsert diskette 1 of the ACP Modem drivers.
  5. Click Next at the Hardware Wizard window. The wizard finds an audio device. Click Next and remove all check marks except from the floppy drive and click Next. Click Next at a:\mwtpdsp.ini. When prompted, insert the next diskette. After the installation is complete, click Finish. Click Yes at the Microsoft Non-Certified driver warning. Click Finish at the Hardware Wizard window and the click Yes to restart. When prompted, change the modem update reminder to the time that you prefer and then close the dialog box.
  6. Log into Windows 2000 with administrator id and password. A Error message dialog box will appear with NAV AutoProtect, unable to Start SymEvent. Click OK to continue.
  7. The modem must be setup under Modems in Control Panel prior to use. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Modems -> Add -> Don't detect the modem - > Next. Scroll down to IBM in the left pane and then scroll down to ThinkPad Modem in the right pane and then click ThinkPad Modem and click Next. Click All ports, and then click Next.
