Aptiva-PS/1 - Swapfiles in Microsoft Windows 3.X

Applicable to: World-Wide

Swapfiles are a special feature of Windows 386 Enhanced Mode. They are used by Windows to increase the memory available to Windows and its applications by swapping open but inactive applications and their data to disk. This increases the available memory for the active applications.

There are two types of swapfiles: Temporary and Permanent. The primary difference is temporary swapfiles are created and removed each time you enter and exit Windows. A permanent swapfile is a reserved portion of your fixed disk which is made up of contiguous (one right after the other) sectors. Since the permanent swapfile is stored on contiguous sectors it operates faster than a temporary swapfile which can be scattered on sectors throughout your fixed disk.

If you would like to check and see if Windows is configured to use a swapfile (temporary or permanent), do the following:

1. Start Windows.
2. Open the Main group and double-click on the Control Panel icon.
3. Double-click on the 386 Enhanced icon.
4. Click once on the Virtual Memory button.
5. You will now see a dialog box listing the current settings for the swapfile.

If you would like more information on swapfiles, refer to your Microsoft Windows User's Guide.
