TP 380XD,385XD - Low Microphone Gain After Reinstalling Windows 95 and/or Audio Features

SYMPTOM:
When the Audio Features Diskette for Windows 95 has been installed or reinstalled on a 380/385XD series machine, the installation leaves the microphone gain at an unacceptably low setting. The incorrect setting is held in the windows registry, and there is not any user accessible way to manually change it.
CONFIGURATION:
This symptom should only be noticed when the system is a Thinkpad 380 or 385 X SERIES ONLY, and has had the Audio Features Diskette for Windows 95 reinstalled. This may occur after reinstalling this driver for some other reason, or if Windows 95 itself has been reinstalled or installed from scratch and then the Audio Features Disk installed.
SOLUTION:
A Windows 95 Registry file is available from this page which can be merged into the registry to correct the setting.
Instructions:
1) Use your web browser software to download the .reg file immediately below this article (MIC12DB.REG)
2) Copy the file to the Thinkpad system in need of the fix, it can be run straight from a diskette, or copied onto the machine and then run.
3) Using the Windows Explorer or "My Computer" double click the icon representing the file.
4) You should receive a confirmation message that the information in the file has been successfully entered into the registry. If you so not see this message, please review steps 1-3.
5) The changes will be in effect when the system is restarted.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: While the Audio Features Diskette available on the WWW is for several different machine types, this condition should only be noticed on Thinkpad 380/385XD machines. Machines preloaded from IBM have the settings properly configured when they leave the factory.
This symptom will be corrected in the next release of the Audio Features Diskette.
