TP 365,560,760,765 - Printing with Infrared under Windows 95

Applicable to: World-Wide

There are two basic methods of infrared printing in Windows 95 on ThinkPads.

A. Using Puma Tranxit's Print Redirector which is preloaded on the system.
B. Using the Windows 95 Infrared driver which can be downloaded from our BBS or from Microsoft.

Using either method, you must first verify that the port is enabled and setup correctly. To do this go into
ThinkPad Features and make sure Infrared is enabled. For my testing on the 760 series machines I set the port to:
ThinkPad High Speed / Generic Mode

I/O Address

1A0

Comm Port

Com 1

IRQ

4

DMA

DMA 0,3

On the ThinkPad 560 and 365 I chose Com1, (The other resources can not be modified on these machines).
If you had to change your settings, you must shut down the computer, power off and restart for the changes to take effect.
Next, right click on the My Computer Icon, then click properties and go to the device manager Tab.
From the device list, locate the Ports (COM & LPT) Section and expand it if necessary by clicking the little "x" next to it.
You should see Communications Port (COM1) listed there with no red X or exclamation point beside it.
If there is a red X on the device, the device is disabled. Click properties and enable the device. If there is an exclamation
point beside it, remove the device, shut down and reboot.

Important:
If there is a device called "Generic IRDA Compatible Device" listed under Ports (COM & LPT), remove it.
Shut down Windows 95 and restart the computer. On boot up you will see the message "Windows has found new hardware
and is installing the software for it". You will have choices for New Hardware found / Generic IRDA Compatible device.
Choose - Select from a list of alternate drivers - Choose Standard Port type - Communications Port.

Your infrared Hardware should now be setup properly.

Install the software for your Printer This is typically done via the Add Printer icon in Windows 95. Refer to your
printer documentation for specifics pertaining to your printer. When installing your printer, set it up as a local printer
connected to the parallel port. We will change that setting later.

A. Configuring Tranxit Print Redirector
=======================================
1. Open the Tranxit program and click the Print Redirector Tab.
2. Open the PrintPro menu at the top and choose "Install" You will get a confirmation that the Redirection driver installed successfully. Click "OK" then click "OK" again to restart your computer.
3. Go into Tranxit again and go to the Print Redirector Tab.
4. Go to the PrintPro menu and click "enable". You will get confirmation that the driver is enabled.
5. Go to the PrintPro menu and choose "Printer Connection". This will display your Installed printers.
6. Right Click on the printer you wish to configure for Infrared and choose Properties.
7. Go to the Details Tab. In the middle of this settings Tab click the down arrow next to your selection for "Print to the following Port".
8. Choose TRANXIT2.PRN (Unknown local port).
9. Click "OK" to leave the setting TAB.
10. Your machine is now setup for infrared printing. In Print Redirector under "Printers Available for Redirection" you should see "Infrared Printer" listed when your printer is in range. "No Printers Available" will be listed when you are out of range. Note: Sometimes it takes up to 20 seconds for the Infrared Printer to be recognized when it first gets in range.

Important:
1. Every time you wish to print to your infrared printer you must start Tranxit and enable Print Redirector. You can go to the PrintPro menu and choose "Always Enabled" which will allow you to print even when Tranxit is closed, but leaving the Print Redirector running may impact system performance due to the increaseoverhead required to run the service in the background.
2. You can tell when Print Redirector is running by checking your Task List in Windows 95. (Ctrl+Alt+Del) "Dtetask" is the Print Redirector driver.

B. Configuring the Windows 95 Infrared driver for printing:
============================================================
1. Obtain the Windows 95 Infrared driver from the IBM Web Site or from Microsoft. The filename is W95IR.EXE on the IBM Web site. http://www.pc.ibm.com .
2. Copy the W95IR.EXE file to a diskette or empty directory and execute it to expand the file.
3. Run the setup program from the diskette or directory to install the driver. There are detailed installation instructions included with the software in a file called RELNOTES.DOC.
4. When the Installation Wizard asked for manufacturer and model of your hardware choose " Built-in Infrared port on laptop or DeskTop" and Click "Next".
5. The Installation will ask you select the port that the infrared device is physically connected to - choose "Communications Port (COM1)".
6. You will next be asked to specify a simulated port. Choose the defaults which are COM4 and LPT3.
7. Windows 95 will detect your new hardware and give you confirmation if the drivers are set up successfully.
8. Go into Control Panel and open the newly installed "Infrared" icon. Choose "OK" to close the setting folder and enable infrared. You should notice a new icon on your task bar in the lower right of your screen. This is your "Infrared Device In Range" indicator.
9. Go to the Printers folder and Right Click on the printer you wish to configure for Infrared and choose Properties.
10. Go to the Details Tab. In the middle of this settings Tab click the down arrow next to your selection for "Print to the following Port".
11. Choose COM4: (Infrared Serial (COM) Connections port) or LPT3: (Infrared printing (LPT) port.
12. Click "OK" to leave the setting TAB.
13. Your machine is now setup for infrared printing. When your machine is in range of the Infrared Printer you will hear a Star Wars like sound and the Infrared indicator on the task bar will change.

Notes: Tranxit will not work while the Windows 95 infrared driver is active. To temporarily disable the infrared driver click
the Infrared icon in the control panel. Go to the option Tab and deselect "Enable infrared printing on: COM1".
