Aptiva - MS Backup is not passing the compatibility test

Applicable to: United States

Some computers fail the Microsoft Backup compatibility test if the floppy drive controller card does not support direct memory access (DMA). This is expected, and is the reason the compatibility test is performed.

Troubleshooting Microsoft Backup (DOS version): If you are running the MS-DOS based version of Microsoft Backup, start your computer with the Clean Start function key (F5) and try the compatibility test again. [Note: This means press the F5 key down when you see the message "Starting MS-DOS ...".]

Troubleshooting Microsoft Backup (Windows 3.1x version): If you are running Microsoft Backup for Windows:

1.) Run File Manager and format a floppy disk to see if you are having problems formatting floppy disks from Windows.
2.) Try running Windows in standard mode and then running the compatibility tests. Note: To run Windows in standard mode, do the following: Exit Windows to a DOS prompt and type: WIN /S

If the compatibility test works in standard mode, but does not work in 386 enhanced mode, remove any virtual device drivers.

IF THE TROUBLESHOOTING STEP FAILED FOR EITHER VERSION:

If your computer does not pass the compatibility test after trying the troubleshooting steps above, you must back up to the MS-DOS path -- no other workarounds are available.

NOTE: When you back up to the MS-DOS path, all your floppy disks must be formatted before backing up.

In order to backup to the DOS path, follow this procedure:

1.) Run MSBackup (either version).
2.) Click on BACKUP TO:
3.) You will be given a list of drives. At the bottom it will say "MS-DOS Path". Click on this.
4.) Underneath MS-DOS Path you will see a box in Windows, and a [........] in DOS. Click in this area.
5.) Type "A:\" (without the quotes). Now it will backup to the disks you place in the A drive.

NOTE: You can reliably backup to the DOS Path EVEN IF YOU FAIL THE COMPATIBILITY TEST. The purpose of the compatibility test is to see if you need to use the MS-DOS Path or not.
