TP General - How to test PCMCIA slots in EZSetup (US Only)

Applicable to: United States

Note: A PC Test Card is necessary to run a more thorough test of the PCMCIA slots. This does not apply to the 365C/CD/E/ED model ThinkPads.

1. Remove any PCMCIA cards from all slots.
2. Turn the computer on while holding down F1.
3. When you get to the EZSetup screen, click on the TEST icon.
4. If you are testing the PCMCIA slots on the ThinkPad, click on PCMCIA-1. If you are testing slots in a Docking Station or Port Replicator then click on PCMCIA-2.
5. If you receive an error message or the test icon for the PCMCIA slot is grayed out then it is likely the slots are defective.

The above procedure just checks the PCMCIA controller to make sure there are no failures there. To perform a more thourough check, a PCMICA test card needs to be inserted so that it can actually test sending and receiving data. To test the slots with a test card, follow steps below.

1. Repeat steps 1-3 from above.
2. From the test screen press the CTRL+A key. This will add two new icons to the screen called LOOPTEST and TOOL.
3. Click on the TOOL icon and it will bring up a new window.
4. If you are testing the PCMCIA slots on the ThinkPad, click on PCMCIA-1. If you are testing slots in a Docking Station or Port Replicator then click on PCMCIA-2. Then click OK.
5. Next it will prompt you to insert the test card. Insert the card and the click OK.
6. It will then bring you back to the main test screen. Click on PCMCIA-1 or PCMCIA-2, depending on which one you are testing. This will only test one slot at a time so if you want to check both the top and the bottom slots and you only have one test card, then you will need to run the test twice.
7. If you receive an error message then it is likely the slots are defective.
