Aptiva - Clicking noise heard in speakers

Applicable to: Canada, EMEA, United States

Symptom:
A clicking or ticking sound is heard from the speakers while using the CD-ROM. This is caused by an improperly routed LAN trace on the printed circuit board of the CD-ROM. The noise is caused by the electronics controlling CD-ROM head movement circuitry.

If the customer plugs a set of headphones into the audio card or the front of the CD-ROM drive the clicking or ticking sound can still be heard.

Customer may call describing a clicking or ticking sound coming from the speakers while playing games from the CD-ROM. This does not cause any other system problems other than described. Affected machine is: 2137 with the following CD-ROMs.

20X CD-ROM FRU P/N 02K2290
24X CD-ROM FRU P/N 02K2291

This is NOT a speaker problem!

Solution:
Replacement of the CD-ROM drive is required to correct the problem. Replace the CD-ROM drive using the following FRU part numbers.

20X CD-ROM FRU P/N 12J6908
24X CD-ROM FRU P/N 12J6909
