IBM ValuePoint - Load arm problems with ALPS diskette drives

Applicable to: World-Wide

Service Information:
Load arm problem on 2133 and 6384 diskette drives. There have been several reported instances where the diskette shutters are being ripped off or damaged when the diskettes are being inserted into the drives. It is considered that the source of the problem is the compatability between the diskettes and the shutter opening arm of the drives. The diskettes from some manufaturers are rough on the edge of the shutters. When these diskettes are used with ALPS drives the opening arm jams and does not allow the diskette to go all the way into the drive. On some drives the load arm mechanism material is softer than the diskette material which results in the arm becoming damaged.

Please use the following table to allow checking of the drives if you experience the diskette damaging problem. If you have the problem obtain a drive with the IBM load arm. The identification of the drives is made by the serial number header. L1Pxx as follows.

L1PF0...... Made in Ireland....... soft load arm
L1PE0...... Made in Japan....... soft load arm

L1PF1...... Made in Ireland....... tempered load arm
L1PE1...... Made in Japan....... tempered load arm

L1PF2...... Made in Ireland....... IBM load arm
L1PF3...... Made in Ireland....... IBM load arm
L1PE3...... Made in Japan....... IBM load arm

Note:
The tempered load arm was an interim solution.
