Aptiva - 2162 WaveStream music synthesizer inactive
Applicable to: United States
Symptom:
Customer can not configure the WaveStream synthesizer. The problem occurs when the you click on "Start", click on "Control Panel", double-click on "Multimedia", choose the "Advanced" tab, open the "MIDI Devices", select "Instruments" section, and double-click "MIDI for WaveStream Music Synthesizer".
The Properties dialog that comes up says "Status: Driver is enabled but inactive due to an unknown problem." You can not play MIDI files through WaveStream because none of them show the WaveStream device in their MIDI Output Device configuration sections:
Win95's built-in Media Player
Aptiva Audiostation
Cakewalk Pro Audio
Solution:
The "WaveStream Music Synthesizer" option should not be listed as an option. This was an oversight and it will not be listed in future software loads. This system does support wavetable synthesis. The user should select the "MIDI for Crystal Plug and Play AudioSystem MPU-401 Compatible" option as the MIDI Output device from the "MIDI" tab found by clicking "Control Panel" and selecting "Multimedia" (Do not select MIDI for FM Synth.).
