Aptiva - 2158/2163/2164 Considerations - System hangs at reboot when Norton AntiVirus 4.08 installed

Description:
System hangs at restart when an application issues a windows exit API with the "ewx_FORCE" option when Norton AntiVirus is installed. System must be powered off then on again.
Models affected:
2158, 2163, and 2164
How to duplicate:
With Norton AntiVirus installed, any application that issues an NON standard shutdown command using the ewx_force option will cause a system hang.
Root cause:
Applications issuing shutdown command is using a non-standard, non Microsoft recommended shutdown command.
When this flag is set, Windows does NOT send the messages wm_queryendsession and wm_endsession to the applications currently running in the system. This can cause the applications to loose data. This feature is NOT recommended by Microsoft.
Workaround:
A) Instruct customer to contact application vendor for newer version that does not use the force option.
B) Disable Norton's Auto-Protect by opening the Auto-Protect icon in the system tray and then selecting the Disable button. The Auto-Protect icon will have the circle with the line through it to indicate that AP is disabled.
C) To disable the Load Auto-Protect at Startup option in Norton AntiVirus:
1. Turn your computer on if it is not already on.
2. Close all open programs.
3. Click the Start button on your Windows 98 desktop.
4. Open the Programs menu to access the Norton AntiVirus menu.
5. Open the Norton AntiVirus menu and click Norton AntiVirus.
6. In the Norton AntiVirus window, click the Options button.
7. In the Options window, click the Auto-Protect tab.
8. On the Auto-Protect page, make sure the Load Auto-Protect at Startup option is not
checked. If it is, click it to remove the check mark.
9. Click OK to save the new setting.
10. Click Yes when you receive this Auto-Protect message: ôNorton AntiVirus Auto-Protect will
not automatically load the next time you restart your computer. Would you like to unload it
now?ö
Disabling the Load Auto-Protect at Startup option in Norton AntiVirus significantly reduces
protection against viruses. You can enable the Load Auto-Protect at Startup option at any time if
you do not want your computer to go on standby automatically.
D) Uninstall Norton AntiVirus (Customer will lose all Virus protection)
