Crossbrand - 118 POST Errors With 16MB Memory SIMM

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
A limited number of 9576s, 9576i, 9577s, or 9577i systems may fail with a 118 error during POST.

Problem Isolation Aids:
All conditions must be met for this tip to apply:
- This tip applies only if the 9576 or 9577 is
a Model xUx, xNx,or xTx.

AND

- A 4MB or 8MB IBM Simm, along with a 16MB IBM, or OEM
Industry Standard Simm are installed in the system.

IBM FRU P/Ns:
4MB Simm FRU P/N92F0105
8MB Simm FRU P/N64F3606
16MB Simm FRU P/N60G2950

AND

- The memory in Mem 1 is always identified as defective.

AND

- Running diagnostics after the 118 error indicates that "0" memory was deallocated.

AND

- This tip applies only if the unit is a 9576i, 9576s, 9577i or 9577s.

Fix:
This problem is the result of an incompatibility between the 4MB and 8MB Simms and the 16MB Simm in these systems. If a
customer encounters the above problem a replacement 4MB or 8MB memory Simm may be obtained. For large quantities, Servicers may contact RTP Level 2 through their normal technical support structure and request replacement 4MB or 8MB Simms that are compatible with the 16MB Simm.

Level 2 support requests that the servicer's name, address and phone number be placed in the PMR so that the replacement
Simms can be sent.

The replaced 4MB or 8MB Simm must be returned to IBM at the following address:

OR

The servicer may order small quantities of the replacement 4MB Simm, FRU P/N73G3233, or 8MB Simm, FRU P/N73G3234, using the normal FRU ordering process.

Until the replacement Simm is obtained the customer may use the system with the 16MB Simm installed. The 16MB Simm
should be installed in MEM 1 and the replacement Simms installed in MEM 2, 3 or 4.

When a final fix is available it will be communicated via this RETAIN Tip. No additional parts should be replaced in an attempt to fix this problem.

Note:
Servicers in Canada should contact Canada Level 2 Support at 1-800-363-2594 to obtain a replacement Simms.
