Aptiva - The ASSIGN command

Applicable to: United States

The ASSIGN command directs disk input/output (I/O) requests for one drive to another drive. It is most often used to "fool" software applications that are written specifically for one drive. For example, most older applications were written to recognize the A: drive as a 5.25" drive. Since the computer industry has moved toward the 3.5" drive as the drive of choice, it may be necessary to assign the drive letter A to the drive that is physically (and normally) the B drive, which is the 5.25" drive.

The assign command is issued from the DOS command prompt. The syntax is as follows:

ASSIGN [drive1:]=[drive2:]

drive1: = specifies the drive to which current disk requests are sent.

drive 2: = specifies the drive to which you now want disk requests sent.

You may include a colon (:) with each drive specified.

To request that drive assignments return to normal, enter: ASSIGN at the DOS command prompt.
