PC Server 720 - ECA002: 100MHz processor for NetWare SMP

Applicable to: World-Wide

PURPOSE:
This ECA provides a replacement 100MHz processor card to enable PC Server 720 systems to operate with Novell NetWare SMP.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO IMPLEMENT THIS ECA ON SYSTEMS RUNNING OS/2, OR OS/2 SMP UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. See DETAIL below.

This ECA expires September 3, 2002.

PHYSICAL CHECK:
IBM PC Server 720 (M/T8642) systems with 100MHz processor board FRU P/N71G0692 are eligible for this ECA.

PREREQUISITES:
******************************* IMPORTANT ******************************
Only systems running or installing Novell Netware SMP may implement this ECA. Systems not running Netware SMP are not
eligible and will experience immediate system failures if this ECA is installed.

COMPANION: NONE

CONCURRENT: NONE

DETAIL:
When the Server 720 was initially announced, Netware SMP was not available and, therefore, was not supported. Netware
version 4.1, was functional and supported in single processor mode.

Novell Netware SMP is now available. During testing, a hardware/software incompatibility was revealed between the
Server 720 processor board and Netware SMP, which causes the operating system to hang (all processors contend for the
same interrupt). This incompatibility is not a result of any hardware defect.

IBM has resolved this incompatibility with a minor hardware change to the processor board design. This change, however,
is NOT COMPATIBLE with OS/2 SMP, which makes it necessary to support and maintain two versions of the 100MHz processor board.

A redesigned 100MHz processor board, FRU P/N75H9684, is being made available at no charge to support IBM customers who wish to run Netware SMP.

The original processor board design, FRU P/N71G0692, will remain available to support OS/2 and other operating systems, and will continue to be shipped from IBM with the Server 720.

An OS/2 software change is being developed, which will provide OS/2 SMP compatibility with the new processor board. This record will be updated upon its availability.

To minimize confusion, an errata sheet providing necessary details for servicers will be added to both the original and
redesigned processor board FRU parts.

For customers meeting the prerequisites stated above, servicers may implement this ECA by ordering FRU P/N75H9684, using normal parts ordering procedures. Eligible systems with multiple 100MHz processors installed must have all processors replaced. The processor board types must not be mixed in a single system.

NOTES:
All labor and parts should be recorded using Service Code 33, Other Office 990, and ECA002. Processor cards removed from eligible systems should be returned to IBM in a timely manner to expedite re-use.
