IBM PS/2 - 9556 SLC3 With CD-ROM Fails At POST

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
Installing a CD-ROM option in the lower bay of the 9556 SLC3 system may cause a short between the CD-ROM and a component (Heat Sink) on the system board. The short will prevent the system from completing POST. The most probable symptom is a system hang.

Fix:
If you still encounter problems during POST, normal problem determination should be performed. A fix has been provided by engineering as follows :-
A 5/16 inch shrink tubing will be placed over the metal tab on the top portion of the heatsink in such a way that it covers the top metal tab (only.) It will extend a 1/4 inch above the Tab. This will prevent contact of the metal heat sink with the bottom or ground tab of the CD-ROM. All new build and field returns will have this fix applied.

Note:
Servicers should continue to remove or insulate the tab on the CDROM.
