IBM PC300GL (Type 6267, 6277, 6287) - UMA cannot access "LOCALHOST:6500" in Internet Explorer

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
When attempting to open the Universal Management Agent (UMA), Internet Explorer reports that it cannot access "http://localhost:6500."

Problem isolation aids:
This tip applies, but is not limited to, IBM PC300GL series 6267/77/87 systems utilizing the Universal Management Agent (UMA) application.

Fix:
The UMA program requires that TCP/IP be properly configured and working in order to view the applications. The following tips will assist you in configuring the TCP/IP settings.

Tip 1: Verify access to 'localhost'
Open a command prompt and attempt to 'ping localhost'. If you are unable to ping localhost, verify that the TCP/IP protocol is installed and functioning. Also, check the Proxy configuration as described in Tip 2.

Tip 2: Check Proxy Server Configuration
When using a proxy server to access the internet, configure the browser to bypass the proxy for local (intranet) addresses. Also, you might want to specify other IP addresses for which the proxy server should not be used.

Tip 3: Using UMA locally while disconnected from the network
When disconnected from the network, the browser can still access UMA information on the local computer. However, you might have to change your browser settings for this scenario. Try the following:

Disable the option Access the Internet using a Proxy Server.

Ensure that Dial-up Networking is installed. If the computer is disconnected from a network, TCP/IP will not start unless it finds an active network adapter. Having a Dial-up Adapter installed will force the TCP/IP stack to start, even if no network connection is available.
