Aptiva - Video hardware conflicts listed in Device Manager

Applicable to: World-Wide

Issue:
Video Hardware Conflicts are listed in Device Manager on models with Pentium-II processors and ATI video controllers.

Background:
It has been observed that Aptiva models with a Pentium-II processor and the ATI 3D graphics subsystem shows a Video Hardware conflict listed in Device Manager. Specifically, the Resources tab under ATI Video adapter shows conflicts on the PCI-to-PCI bridge (2 memory ranges - Video Memory/Register Area apertures) and on one I/O range (I/O - Mapped Register Area).

Resolution:
This conflict is found in any AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) system. It is actually a deficiency of the operating system since Windows 95 does not recognize AGP by default. The operating system only recognizes that there are some PCI resources being used by a non PCI device (AGP in this case). This new technology will be recognized fully by the new Windows 98 operating system, which will be AGP aware (Windows 95 is not).

There are no functional problems due to this conflict.

To address the specific concerns on possible ramifications, IBM tested the following:

- Orchid Richeous 3D (3D FX ) adapter - No problems found
- Games made for ATI Video - No problems found
- IDE Sparq device - Not applicable to this issue. IDE is not AGP related.
