Aptiva - Access Denied message when deleting files

Applicable to: World-Wide

The message "Access Denied" or some variant of this message may occur when you are attempting to rename or delete files from the system, whether from the DOS Prompt, DOSSHELL, Windows File Manager, or Windows Explorer. There may be several reasons for this message, and it is necessary to determine the reason before attempting further changes or other commands on that file.

Anytime you see this message, be cautious about any actions that you might want to try. The file you want to delete may either be protected in some manner or it may be in use by another application or system function. Deleting or renaming the file may cause an application or the system to malfunction.

Keep in mind that it is not an accident for files to be protected -- the program that set up the file so that it is protected did so for a reason, and deleting the file may lead to further problems.

One reason for the message might be that the file is in use by another program or by the system itself. You must then wait for that application or system program to complete its work before you can try again to rename or delete the file.

Another reason for the Access Denied message is that the file has been marked with a read-only attribute. The program that caused this to happen will have done so because it is important that the file not be modified or erased, since it may otherwise affect the operation of the program or the system. Even after the program has completed, the file may have been left protected for future use.

If you are no longer using an application, check the user's guide for the application. It may provide a way to uninstall itself and thus remove the file. If the application has such a function, use it, since the uninstall of an application may involve changes in other system files as well as removing the files that belong to the application.

If the application provides no way to uninstall itself, then you may need to delete the directory where the application is located, and you may then encounter the Access Denied message for one or more files in this directory. In such a case, you can delete the file using the DOS "ATTRIB" command as follows:

ATTRIB filename.ext -S -H -R

DEL filename.ext

Note: Do not delete any protected file in the root directory (C:\) or in the \DOS, \WINDOWS, or \PS1TOOLS directories, unless you have specific instructions that it is necessary to delete the file. Otherwise, you may encounter problems later that will be difficult to correct.
