What will Device Manager tell me?

If the modem is working properly, everything will appear correctly in Device Manager.
If the modem is bad, not seated or the modem drivers have been deleted, the modem may not appear in Device Manager.

Where do I find out if the modem driver is correct?
1. Go to Start - Settings - Control Panel.
2. Double-click on Modem. The Modem Properties should have 2 tabs, General and Diagnostics.
3. AT&T Win Modem. If another Modem is listed, remove it and reboot. (The system should detect the AT&T Win Modem, if not follow the install instructions below. )
4. Check the customer's Dialing Properties to ensure they are correctly specified for his/her configuration.
(Correct area code, dial 9 to access an outside line, etcà.)
5. Under the Diagnostics Tab, the modem should be on COM1.
6. Under the Driver Tab, the driver will be comm.drv dated 8/24/1996 and size 5856 bytes.
7. For More Info, Windows 95 will communicate with the modem and find it at COM1, Interrupt 4. It will communicate whether a phone line is attached or not. (If you receive an error, "couldn't open port"*, reseat the card.)

Reinstalling the drivers:

1. With the system booted, have the customer place the Diagnostics and Utilities CD in the CD-ROM Drive.
2. Go to Start - Run and type the following:

For 2159 Systems type:
xcopy g:\disk\attmodem\attmodem\drvs c:\windows\*.* /s/e/y

For 2161 Systems type:
g:\disk\attmodem\attmodem\install.bat [Note: Diagnostic and Utility CD required]

3. When the installation is complete (9 files should be copied) remove the diagnostics and utilities CD and reboot the computer.

If all of the settings listed above are correct, and the modem is still not functioning properly, try a different phone line or phone jack. (Remember to check the length of the phone line, if the customer's phone line is long and he is having trouble maintaining a connection, try a shorter cable.)

Diagnostics:

What is the best way to tell if the modem is bad or not seated properly?

1. Go to Control Panel. (Start-Settings-Control Panel)
2. Double-click on the Modem icon.
3. Click the Diagnostics Tab.
4. Click More Info. If you receive any errors, (e.g., port already open, couldn't open port, if it cannot communicate) run diagnostics, then reseat the card.
5. For US calls, check with an LPS before replacing the card.

What do I do if none of the above steps installs the modem?

1. Reseat the card.
2. When the customer reboots, Windows 95 should detect the card.

What will the Diagnostics from the Diagnostics and Utilities CD tell me?

1. Easy Test Diagnostics has a test for the modem. If the modem passes diagnostics, there will be a message at the bottom of the log that states: Lucent Modem Diagnostics : Passed.
2. If the modem is not seated properly, the Lucent Modem Diagnostics line will not appear in the log.
3. If the modem is bad and needs to be replaced, diagnostics may hang (Modem COM port = 0001),
4. LEPNPTSR.EXE is the DOS TSR that loads before testing the modem.

Removing the Modem:

1. Remove the modem from Device Manager.
2. Click on Start - Settings - Control Panel.
3. Double-click on System, and click the Device Manager tab.
4. Click on the "+" sign beside the modem and click on AT&T Win Modem (may be called LT Win Modem).
5. Click on Remove.
6. Click on OK and Shutdown the Computer.
7. Remove the modem from the system unit.
8. Remove the screws from the top of the system unit. (Under the handle for S Series.)
9. Slide the cover off.
10. Remove the screw holding the modem from the back of the system and unplug all cables attached to the modem.
11. Remove the card with the black box on it.

Error Messages:

Windows 95 will display error messages if there is a comport conflict.

The modem does not generate any error messages, although if the modem is not functioning properly, an error message may occur , e.g., port already open.

DOS TSR:

òNative DOS (Real DOS) is supported through a DOS TSR named LEPNPTSR.EXE.
òDOS TSR is launched in Windows through the following:
òStart - Programs - DOS Mode - Exit to DOS Mode with Modem Support.
òCannot boot directly to DOS Mode without launching the DOS TSR. (not recommended)
òThe user must type exit when leaving DOS in order to unload the TSR. òNot all AT commands are supported in DOS Mode, check the Hardware Handbook.
òDOS Box behaves like Windows 95, most all functions supported.

Technical Limitations:

òFor some PureSpeech wav files, there is a grinding noise for about 1 second.
òSometimes there will be a raspy dial tone and ring back until connected.

Differences Between Mwave Modem(s) and AT & T WinModem

òNo modem panel
òno on-line documentation
òcannot boot directly into DOS mode
òClass 1 fax supported only (Compatible with Class 2)
òHandset support is on card (No Splitter or Dongle needed)

Country Select Program

This is a program in Non US preloads which configures the modem via software for a specific country. The icon is located in AptivaWare.

Documentation:

Full modem command set in Hardware Handbook
No on-line documentation

* "couldn't open port" could indicate a bad or not seated modem.
