Crossbrand - Stacker and DOS Partitions

Applicable to: United States

If you have multiple partitions set up on your hard drive, there are no problems with compressing one or more of the partitions and leaving the other partition(s) uncompressed.

Note that it may be desirable to use Stacker in a manner that will produce the same result without having to set up separate partitions on the disk. That is, start up the Stacker program STAC, select Compress Drive, choose the drive to compress, and then select the Free Space option. Follow the on-screen directions for specifying the new drive size and the drive letter that will be assigned to it.

Using this method, you can assign a specific drive letter to the newly created compressed drive, rather than having it assigned in sequence by DOS if you had partitioned the hard drive with the FDISK command. Also, by compressing the free space on the drive, you will be able to use the Stacker Toolbox utilities to monitor the drive and to check for errors and fragmentation levels.
