7855 Modem - Changing from synchronous to asynchronous

Applicable to: EMEA

External 7855-010 and 7855-018 modems are set for synchronous operation when they leave the factory. To transfer asynchronous data, execute AT commands, and use the IBM 7855 configuration tool, they must be changed to asynchronous. Here is how to manually change a 7855-010 or 7855-018 from synchronous to asynchronous operation:

1. Press the LEFT and the RIGHT arrow buttons at the same time and you should see the message "<EXIT ENTER>" on the display.
2. Press the RIGHT arrow to "VIEW ONLY".
3. Press the DOWN arrow to "FIRST SETUP".
4. Press the RIGHT arrow to "SYNCHRONOUS".
5. Press the UP arrow twice until you see "ASYNC AT".
6. Press the LEFT arrow to make the change. Now press the LEFT arrow 4 more times to exit the configuration menus. Your modem will now be set for asynchronous operation and is able to accept AT commands. Note that the internal PS/2 version of the 7855 is set to synchronous or asynchronous by doing normal PS/2 configuration setup.
