Computer Acronyms and Abbreviations Index
Applicable to: World-Wide
One of the more confusing aspects of the computer industry is the use of acronyms and abbreviations whose meanings are not immediately apparent. The following list is offered as a means of simplifying the task of translating these terms into something more understandable. In parentheses, after many terms, you will find the company or organization that coined the term, or the organization that codified the standard, or a reference to the technology that the term relates to (e.g., frame relay, or TCP/IP). This isn't a complete list by any means (if that is even possible), but it should be enough to explain most acronyms and abbreviations you are likely to come across. Also, more than one product name or industry standard may use the same acronym. Whenever possible all known meanings for an acronym have been listed, but others may exist.
Due to the size required to create a full glossary, this document is simply a list of terms, on the theory that often just knowing what the letters stand for is enough to get you by. For a more detailed description of terms, you may be interested in purchasing a book of computer terminology. Note: All trademarks are the property of their respective owners.
