Crossbrand - Why is the Windows 98 Disk Defragmenter taking so long?

Applicable to: World-Wide

The program is working as designed. The Disk Defragmenter program has new features in Windows 98; these features speed up your programs, but using the features slows down the defragmentation process.
The Disk Defragmenter monitors your system to find out which programs you are using most often. It looks at how those programs load files. When it is defragmenting the system, it arranges those files in a manner so that they load faster. Most of this work appears to be done when the status bar reads 10%; once it gets past that, it speeds up in the rest of the process.

If you have recently installed Windows 98, it would be best to wait a few weeks before using the Disk Defragmenter program, as this helps the system figure out which files are most important to load fast. It is also a good idea to use the Maintenance Wizard to schedule defragmenting at night, when you do not need to wait on the computer.

Because of the way that the program works, you should not use any other disk defragmentation utility (such as Norton SpeedDisk). The two programs would use different methods, and undo each other's efforts.
