Aptiva-PS/1 - Explanation of CHKDSK report

Applicable to: United States

Below is a sample report from CHKDSK. Line numbers have been inserted at the start of each line to permit easy identification in the explanation below the report.

1) Volume MAIN FOLDER created 03-11-1994 1:00a

2) Volume Serial Number is 1F25-8593

3)

4) 267,026,432 bytes total disk space

5) 17,584,128 bytes in 4 hidden files

6) 917,504 bytes in 210 directories

7) 146,808,832 bytes in 4,263 user files

8) 101,715,968 bytes available on disk

9)

10) 4,096 bytes in each allocation unit

11) 65,192 total allocation units on disk

12) 24,833 available allocation units on disk

13)

14) 655,360 total bytes memory

15) 635,712 bytes free

The following text is an explanation of each line.

1) This is the volume label for the drive, including the date and time when the drive was last formatted. To change the label, use the DOS LABEL command.

2) This is a unique serial number generated during FORMAT for this drive. It is not generally useful for hard drives, but DOS can use this to detect if a floppy disk has been removed and replaced with a different diskette. This is useful for some of the DOS maintenance utilities, as well as by some DOS applications.

3) Blank line

4) This value represents the total amount of disk space on the drive that DOS can access.

5) This value indicates the amount of space on the hard drive used for hidden files. These files are normally used by DOS or Windows for various purposes and should not be changed or removed manually. Applications may also have hidden files.

6) This value shows the amount of space used for allocating the directories and subdirectories on the drive. Each directory requires a 1024-byte area to store the name, date and time of creation, sector information, and other data required for directories. Most directories require more than one 1024-byte area, depending on the number of subdirectories and files in that directory. Dividing the total value by 1024 will yield the number of directory allocations on the drive, and this number will usually be significantly different than the number of directories reported in this line.

7) This line shows the number of files on the drive and how much space they require.

8) This line indicates the total amount of free space on the drive. Due to the way disk space is allocated, this number should be regarded as an approximation when trying to determine whether a new file or application will fit on the drive.

9) Blank line

10) This value shows the size of each allocation unit. The minimum allocation unit on a drive is the sector, which is fixed at 512 bytes in size. Depending on the size of the drive, several sectors are combined together in a cluster, and this allocation unit size indicates the size of a cluster. In this example, 8 sectors are included in a cluster or allocation unit.

11) The total number of clusters (allocation units) on the drive are represented in this line. Multiplying this value by the size of each allocation unit should be equal to the total space available on the drive.

12) This line shows the number of available clusters or allocations units on the drive. This pool of clusters will be used when new files are created.

13) Blank line

14) The total amount of conventional memory is shown in this line. The number is in decimal notation. If this value were to be computed in metric notation, it would be 640K, which is the number often used by software packages for denoting memory requirements.

15) The amount of free memory space in the conventional memory area is shown here. Note that this does not always correspond to the amount of conventional memory needed to run a particular program, since this value may consist of a large contiguous block of memory and a number of small scattered blocks of free memory. A true picture of memory allocation can be obtained with the MEM command.

On occasion, you may see lines in the CHKDSK output that are similar to the following:

419 lost allocation units in 3 chains

6,864,896 bytes disk space would be freed

Here, CHKDSK is reporting that it found some discrepancies in the file system. In this example, it has found 419 lost allocation units (clusters) in 3 chains, where each chain of clusters will belong to a specific file. This type of report indicates that one or more files were deleted incorrectly by a program, or they are temporary files that were not cleared properly, or some external action, such as a power down in the middle of an operation, could have left the files open and stranded.

To get rid of the messages and to recover the space used by these lost allocation units, enter the command: CHKDSK /F at a DOS prompt after exiting from Windows. When the command is executed, it will stop and ask if you want to convert the lost units to files. Reply NO -- it's unlikely that the lost units will be of any use. When it completes, your system will now have the lost disk space once again available for use.
