Aptiva - 2144 Installing Aria 16 sound card in Windows 95

Applicable to: World-Wide

Question:
How do I install my Aria 16 sound card in Windows 95?

Answer:
The following outlines the process of installing the Aria 16 sound card software into a machine running Windows 95. If the machine has just been formatted and a FULL VERSION of Windows 95 installed then all 3 components (A, B and C) must be done in order. If the machine had just been upgraded through the UPGRADE VERSION of Windows 95 then only the last 2
components (B and C) need to be followed. This note assumes you have completed the installation of Windows 95 previously.

A: Restoring the directory and drivers for the Aria sound card:

1. Place the Product Recovery CD (P/N 10H3122) into the CD-ROM drive and access an MS-DOS PROMPT by clicking "START", then "PROGRAMS" and select "MS-DOS PROMPT".

2. Type E: and press "ENTER", where E denotes your CD-ROM drive letter. The machine comes with the CD-ROM configured as the E:, however if a complete re-load of Windows 95 was done the CD-ROM may show up as the D: drive.

3. Change to the Recovery directory by typing CD\RECOVERY\US and then press "ENTER".

4. Restore the Aria directories by typing

pkunzip *.zip -o -d c:\ aria\*.*

and then press "ENTER".

5. Once this has finished a number of lines need to be added to the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. Switch to your hard drive by typing C: and then press "ENTER".

6. To edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file type EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT and press "ENTER". Add the following lines:

SET ARIA=A290 I10 D5 T1
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T1

When finished with the file, save it and exit.

7. To edit the CONFIG.SYS file type EDIT C:\CONFIG.SYS and press "ENTER". Add the following lines to the file:

device=c:\windows\himem.sys
devicehigh=c:\aria\bin\soundcfg.sys c:\aria\aria.cfg 298
devicehigh=c:\aria\bin\sndsaver.sys /r298

When finished with the file, save it and exit.

8. Restart the computer for these changes to take effect.

B: Aria sound card component:

1. In Windows 95, click on "START", then "SETTINGS", then "CONTROL PANEL" and choose "ADD NEW HARDWARE".

2. To begin the install click "NEXT", select "NO" to select the hardware yourself and then "NEXT" again.

3. From the Hardware Types list select "Sound, video and game controllers" and then click "NEXT".

4. Click on the "Have Disk" button.

5. Remove the A:\ from the dialog box and type C:\ARIA\WIN to replace it.

6. Click on oemsetup.inf and then click on "OK" twice.

7. Double click on "Aria Multimedia Audio System" and then "Finish".

8. To finish installing the drivers it will ask you to restart the machine, click "YES".

C: Microsoft Sound System Component:

4. From the list on Manufactures select DSP Group and then click on "NEXT".

5. Click on "FINISH". Windows 95 will install the drivers and then ask you to again restart the machine, select "YES".
