PS/1 - Installing STACKER Disk Compression Utility on PS/1
Applicable to: United States
Following are the instructions that will help you install the disk compression utility STACKER on your PS/1 Models 2011 and 2121:
1. Read the Stacker installation manual completely, inorder to match the installation to your system. Review the file README.DOC from the Stacker diskette.
2. Start IBM DOS from the 4 quadrant screen. Click on BACKUP AND RESTORE YOUR FIXED DISK , press [Enter]. Click on the option "Backup your entire fixed disk" , press [Enter]. Follow the prompts that you are given to backup all of the files on your fixed disk. After the backup has been made, select CUSTOMIZE HOW YOUR SYSTEM STARTS.
3. The second option down on the screen is labelled, "Choose where the computer looks for the operating system", click on the last option, "Try Diskette First, Then Try Fixed Disk", so that the triangular marker moves down to this option. After changing the location where your PS/1 looks for the operating system, press ENTER to save the changes.
4. Press F3 to exit DOS.
5. Insert the STACKER diskette in drive A and select YOUR SOFTWARE. Click on the A drive icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
6. Double-click on the word INSTALL that shows on the folder that opens on your screen. This is the INSTALL program for STACKER. The INSTALL program will ask you multiple choice questions. Answer each of the questions as directed in the following steps:
7. Choose to continue installation.
8. Choose to copy STACKER files to C:\STACKER\
9. Choose to modify the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
10. Choose to continue without rebooting.
11. Choose to stack an existing disk with its data.
12. Choose C:Hard Disk as the disk you want to stack.
13. Choose to Create the Stacker drive. If you are asked if you want to remove a permanent Windows swap file, choose Y for Yes. The compression of files will take a short while, depending on how many files the STACKER program has to compress.
14. After the installation procedure is finished, remove the STACKER diskette and reboot your PS/1.
If you have problems with the program and want to UNINSTALL STACKER to return your PS/1 prior to installing STACKER , you will need your set of DOS Backup disks. These disks are used to FORMAT and RESTORE the fixed drive. Thus, it is extremely important that you backup your fixed disk before installing the STACKER program. (It is not overly prudent to make two sets of BACKUP disks.)
