Aptiva - 21xx-6xP FDISK, Format, and Reload procedures

Creating a Recovery Diskette:
Normal Process:
If you have systems that are working and need to create a recovery diskette, do the following:

1. Find the Aptivaware icon on the Desktop.
2. Double-click on the icon.
3. Find the Custom Tools (or First Steps) icon and double-click on it.
4. Choose Make Recovery Diskette.
5. Make sure you have a formatted high density diskette in drive a. Any data on the diskette will be lost.

Alternative Process:
If you have a virus on the hard drive or you can boot to your hard drive, but cannot get into Windows, do the following: Get to a DOS prompt. (Exiting Windows will take you to a DOS prompt.) Put the recovery CD in the CD ROM drive. It is probably named the Multimedia Exploration CD, and it will be white with Aptiva written on the top of it. At the command prompt type D:


FDISK:
NOTE: FDISK will destroy all of your data!
To FDISK, do the following:

1. Boot with the recovery diskette and choose the option 3 off of the menu that reads "Go to a DOS prompt".
2. At the DOS prompt, type FDISK.
3. Choose Option 3, Delete primary partition or logical drive.
4. It will warn you that all data will be lost, does he want to continue? Choose Y for Yes.
5. Choose Option 1. Create primary DOS partition or logical DOS drive.
6. Choose Option 1 again. Create primary partition.
7. Hit the ESC key twice to exit FDISK. With the diskette in drive a:, press ctl-alt-del to reboot the system.

Format:
1. From the menu choose option 3, "Go to a DOS prompt".
2. At the command prompt again, type FORMAT C: .
3. It will warn you that all data will be lost, Choose Y to continue with the format.
4. After the hard drive is formatted, Type exit.

Recovery:
1. At the blue menu screen again, choose option 1, "Reload original IBM Aptiva Software".
2. At this point it will tell you to place the recovery CD in the CD ROM drive and press any key to continue.
3. The system will reload automatically.
