Aptiva - Using Windows to perform file management functions

Applicable to: United States

Windows offers several utilities that let you control the appearance and operation of your Windows environment and applications. You can find most of these utilities in the Main group. Two useful Windows file management utilities are File Manager and DOS prompt.

Windows File Manager
The File Manager utility displays the disk drives installed on your system and shows the directory tree for the active drive. It also lets you perform most routine file management tasks. To start the program, double-click the File Manager icon in the Main group.

From File Manager you can move and copy files between diskettes and sub-directories and you can create or delete sub-directories to better organize your files. You also can format, copy, and label floppy diskettes. Depending on how you configure your applications, you can launch programs such as Works for Windows from the File Manager. The SEARCH command on the File menu helps you locate files you've misplaced among the directories on your hard disk.

To close File Manager, double-click on the Control box in the upper-left corner of the main File Manager window.

The DOS Prompt
When you double-click on the DOS prompt icon, Windows returns you to the DOS command line. However, it does so without completely closing the Windows environment. You can use the DOS prompt to start a DOS session, perform tasks in DOS, and return to Windows without closing your Windows applications. Remember, since your computer is still running Windows in the background, you may not have enough memory available to launch powerful DOS programs, but you should be able to run small programs and DOS utilities, such as Format, from the command line. To return to Windows, type exit and press Enter.
