Aptiva - Does Microsoft Works support expanded memory?

Yes. Works supports both Lotus/Intel/Microsoft (LIM) specifications 3.2 and 4.0 for Expanded Memory Specifications (EMS).

Works uses expanded memory (EMS) in 16K blocks. If the memory required to store a Spreadsheet row or Database record is larger than 16K, that row or record is not stored in expanded memory; instead, it is stored in conventional memory. The program will take advantage of up to 16 megabytes of expanded memory if available on your system.

The raw increase in capacity for the Spreadsheet or Database when using expanded memory is the same. The amount of additional capacity available is dependent on many factors, and no algorithm exists for determining exactly how many additional records you can enter for each additional unit of expanded memory added to your system.

Examples of factors affecting available memory are as follows:

• The number of open files. (Works allows a maximum of eight files to be open simultaneously.)

• The size of each open file.

• The number of fields or columns, and their individual widths.

• Memory resident programs (TSRs). Each memory resident program run concurrently with Works detracts from available memory (for example, device drivers, and special utilities).
