Aptiva 2116 (MM55) Monitors - Display smeared, blurry or rainbow colors

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
The monitor is displaying smeared, blurry or rainbow colors on all or a portion of the display.

Solution:
1. Move any other electrical or electronic devices at least two feet away from the monitor. This includes, but is not limited to radios and desk lamps. IBM system units and speakers need not be moved.

2. Use the degauss feature on the monitor. This is the option in the bottom right of the on-screen menu. It appears as a crossed-out horseshoe magnet. It may be necessary to use this two or three times to clear the display.

Explanation:
The image on a monitor is "painted" by streams of precisely aimed electrons inside of the tube. The path of the electrons travel in the tube may be affected by a magnetic field close to the monitor. This causes blurred colors or a rainbow effect on the screen. In fact, the stream of electrons in a picture tube is focused and steered by carefully controlled magnetic fields produced by the monitor.

The stream of electrons may be deflected some time after a magnetic field is removed, due to a portion of the screen being magnetized. "Degaussing" is the process of removing any residual magnetic fields from the screen.
